Today I’d like to talk to you about the 6 easy steps you should be following in your quest to play the guitar. First of all you must learn Open Chords. They use open strings as well as pressed notes and are commonly used by guitar players of all styles simply because they are great. Practice a few of them each week and, once you get them to sound good on their own, practice the chord changes without loosing the beat. You should be done in a month learning them all and they will enable you to play quite a few tunes. You then need to start focusing on strumming and bring some feel into your music. You should be playing always on the beat at this stage with a down-stroke and, as you get into it, start using occasional strums on the up-beat using up-strokes. Following this tip – down-strokes on the down-beat and up-strokes on the up-beat – will help you keep your timing. Put what you have learned into practice and start playing a few songs that use open chords. You’ll find many songs in the modern catalogue that meet this criterium and a good idea would be to find the records and play-along with them. This is such a great exercise as you will be practicing with the pro’s and that will help you in your learning.   Learn all the 7th & sus Open Chords and start using them in your playing.   Now it’s time to start learning a few fingerpicking patterns. This technique is commonly used by electric and acoustic guitarists alike in ballads and uptempo songs. Fingerpicking makes you use your fingers to pluck the strings instead of a guitar pick and that has a very distinctive feel.   In the end start playing more difficult chords like F and the Barre Chords. The E & A shape Barre Chords are definitely more demanding than the Open Chords but will enable you to play any chord all over the fretboard of the guitar.
